Guidelines to Avoid Cybersecurity Issues in the Car during Vacations

The driving safety associated with smart cars is not always reflected at the cybersecurity level.

Advanced navigation systems, automated driving assistants and internet connectivity bring improvements to the driver experience and help prevent accidents with measures such as collision alerts and automatic braking.

However, always-on connectivity makes the latest generation of cars a target for cyber criminals.

Last year, large-scale cyber incidents in the automotive industry grew by 150%, with most of them being executed remotely and over long distances. This is according to data from Upstream Security reported by Kaspersky, which adds that the threat extends to the supply chain. Nearly two-thirds of automotive executives consider the supply chain to be vulnerable. The integration of infotainment software and connectivity is one of the biggest risks identified.

As a result, it opens the door to unauthorised system access, manipulation of critical functions and interception of sensitive information.

In addition to the risk to the physical safety of drivers and passengers, this has potential consequences for fraud, identity theft and financial health.

With many people travelling by road to their holiday destinations, Kaspersky recommends protective solutions for both manufacturers and individuals.

First and foremost, update vehicle software on a regular basis. Multi-factor authentication should also be implemented, as well as security solutions capable of monitoring the network to prevent unauthorised activity.

‘With the increased use of smart cars, it is crucial that proactive measures are taken,’ says Marc Rivero, Lead Security Researcher at Kaspersky.

‘The summer holidays represent an ideal opportunity to enjoy the convenience and security offered by these cars,’ he says, ’as long as you keep in mind the importance of keeping cyber security a priority.
