SynthID: Google Tool Recognises Images Generated by AI

SynthID, developed by the DeepMind team, applies an invisible watermark to AI-generated images. Google also plans to make SynthID available to third-party providers in the future.

Google has introduced a new tool called SynthID, designed to help distinguish images created by artificial intelligence from those made by humans.

Developed by Google’s DeepMind team, SynthID adds an imperceptible digital watermark to AI-generated images, similar to a signature. This watermark can later be detected by the same tool. According to Google, the watermark remains intact even if the image is edited by applying filters, compressing it, or altering its colors.

SynthID for Third-Party Providers in the Future

To perform these tasks, the developers have combined two deep learning models: one that adds the watermark, imperceptible to the human eye, and another that identifies the watermarked images.

One limitation is that, at present, SynthID can only recognize images generated using Google’s text-to-image tool, Imagen. However, Google is offering other companies the opportunity to integrate SynthID into their own generative AI tools, which would expand its reach.

Currently, SynthID is only available to Vertex AI customers using Imagen. However, Google DeepMind has announced that the tool will soon be accessible in other Google products and to third-party providers.
