What Skills are Companies Requesting from Generation Z?

According to a study by HAYS, more than a third of companies believe that communication is the most important skill they need to develop.

36% of employers believe that the most important skill that members of Generation Z need to develop in order to thrive in the workplace is communication.

This is revealed in a survey by HAYS. ‘It is considered a skill of the utmost relevance, as it goes beyond written and verbal skills, and also includes active listening, empathy and the ability to express and convey ideas clearly, as well as non-verbal language,’ says Alba Solís, Senior Manager of Perm Recruitment Services at HAYS Spain.

In her opinion, part of Generation Z is ‘at a disadvantage due to the pandemic, as it meant the loss of opportunities to develop basic social skills and limited everyone to interact remotely. For young people, it was an obstacle at such a critical time in their lives to learn and develop personal skills.

Another skill required of them, according to 35% of respondents, is adaptability. ‘With the pace of technological change, the ability to adapt to changing environments is very important for organisations and ensures that professionals remain relevant in a constantly evolving world of work,’ explains Solís.

They would also need to demonstrate other skills such as problem solving and teamwork, according to 16% and 13% of respondents, respectively.

To develop these skills, 46% point to training as a key formula, including workshops and online courses or one-to-one mentoring in which experienced employees pass on their knowledge. Thirteen percent place importance on internships and only 10 percent see self-study as the best option.
